MMR outbreaks London

Since the beginning of February 2016 there has been a significant number of laboratory confirmed measles cases within London, many of which have been in unvaccinated young adults, although cases have ranged from infants to adults in their 50’s.

Measles is a highly infectious viral illness that can be very unpleasant and sometimes lead to serious complications. If you have a rash, especially if preceded by a fever, you should always telephone ahead before attending the practice, and report to reception on arrival.

On attendance at the practice you may be isolated at the earliest opportunity to reduce the risk of infection.

The MMR vaccination remains the most effective way to protect against measles.

The practice is currently running a campaign to ensure all patients from 13 months to 18 years have received the 2 dose course to help protect against the virus. If you are unsure if your child has completed the course, please ask at reception who can make an appointment with the Nurse. Please note, there is no upper age limit to receive this vaccine and if unsure of your vaccination status please be reassured that extra doses will not cause problems in individuals with a healthy immune system.
